Last august we decided to increase our portfolio by adding some more wines from Sicily. Our choice fell over a small organic winery run by three brothers : The Funaro winery. Located in the province of Trapani between the municipalities of Salemi and Santa Ninfa, it extends over 85 hectares and was founded in 2003.
Since 2011 they officially obtained the BIO certification. In the vineyard the treatments are as natural as possible with they use of only organic fertilizers, legume crops and green manure; a relevant point of this aspect is that all the wines produced have a value of less than 100 mg / l of sulfur dioxide.
The care for every detail that starts in the vineyard continues in the cellar and strict respect for the production stages lead to low yields per hectare. They decided not to produce thousands of bottles but they simply care for their grapes by following the seasons and the rhythms of nature.
Their wine cellar was designed in accordance with modern, Eco-friendly architectural techniques, which enable them to drastically reduce CO2 emissions (external thermal cladding, photo-voltaic system, solar heating system). A mention also for the fact that waste waters are purified naturally by means of an active herbal purification process, which means that the purified water may then be used for crop irrigation.
They also have a modern and well equipped laboratory which enable them to analyze and constantly monitor the entire production process.
In addition to indigenous vines such as Inzolia, Catarratto, Grillo, Zibibbo, Nero D’Avola and Perricone, they decided to include international varieties such as Chardonnay, Muller Thurgau, Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. An important work is the specific terroir selected for each of the vine, where slope exposure, thermal excursion between day and night and soil minerality are taken into consideration for the choice.
Products such as Inzolia, Fontana dei Grilli Perricone and Pinzeri Grillo are an expression of the typicality and the nature of their land as well as a perfect synthesis of the Sicilian wine-making tradition and the most Eco-friendly modern production techniques.
